The gentle thrum of the engine, the open road, the radio playing his favorite music – these were the things that defined Mark’s existence. He was a long-haul trucker, seeing the country, on his own terms. His life was solitary, but satisfying. His debts were small, and his needs were simple. He felt free.

He wasn't overly social, but he had a few friends among the other drivers, and they met for coffee at truck stops. He felt a sense of freedom. He was answerable to no one.

During a chance encounter with a younger driver at a roadside diner, the conversation turned to pay. Mark learned that the new recruits were getting paid a premium. He sipped his coffee, his expression unreadable, and he went back to his job.
